ASI: Which Promo Products Do Students Grab Most?

Unsurprisingly Students are a HUGE fan of free stuff, just go to an IKEA store near a university town and see how popular those free pencils are. ASI has just released a report on Spring Career Fairs showing what promotional products students find most popular.

USB drives are extremely popular, and are always taken quicker than pens and cups. Including with this were earbuds, these proved to be more popular than sunglasses but that may be due to the weather during that time. 

More exiting ideas in promotional products came from unusual grab bags including pens, a Swiss Army knife style USB drive, and Silly Putty.  

Some companies even offered free food, as various companies gave candy, Wolf Greenfield offered branded chocolate bars and Kraft Heinz provided a smorgasbord of products such as Mac and Cheese cups and Crystal Light packets.  This just goes to prove that the closest way to someone's heart or resume is through their stomach.

SMMEX 2016 – Sports Merchandise and Marketing Exhibition

SMMEX International - the biggest sports merchandise and marketing exhibition annually taking place in London - has celebrated its 18th birthday this week. To mark the occasion, the show had been extended to a two-day event, and on the 15th and 16th of February thousands of marketers, suppliers and customers gathered at Wembley Stadium.




The popularity of the show is increasing year on year, and being open for two days allowed the team to pack more into this exclusive meeting of industry leaders, sports clubs and powers within the licensing world.

The SMMEX team have built a solid database over the last 17 years to produce a highly targeted audience and named readership of over 18,000 individuals, which cannot be matched by any other sporting publication.

Following on from the success of 2015’s seminar programme 2016 has seen 20 key speakers over the two days and included CPLG, Nottingham Forest, Imperial War Museum and WWF.

Held inside Wembley Stadium, #SMMEX2016 gave buyers and key decision-makers the chance to meet up with premier suppliers of unique products and services in a relaxed, informal environment. There we could see representatives from professional sports clubs, blue chip companies, hotel chains, license holders, media owners, retailers, schools & universities as well as venue operators.

Promotional Industry Research: Products Popularity

The Advertising Specialty Institute, our favourite source of information about the promotional products industry state, has recently conducted its annual ASI Ad Impressions Study — a cost analysis of promotional products versus other advertising media. For this specific research, thousands of in-person and online interviews have been conducted with businesspeople and students in key cities around North America, Canada, Europe and Australia. 

U.S. consumers were asked which promotional products they currently owned. As the image below reveals, T-shirts are the item that is most often owned by promotional product recipients in the U.S., followed by drinkware, writing instruments and outerwear. In fact, all promotional products have strong ownership, with one-quarter or more of recipients owning each.



Also, the respondents throughout the world were asked to rate up to three promotional items they had received in the last 12 months — you can see the results on the graphics below. For example, 53% of the consumers in Rome own branded shirts — the highest percentage of any of the 21 metro areas in the survey. In London writing instruments gained 56%, and in Mexico top promotional product is drinkware.

  • Bags generate more impressions in the U.S. than any other promotional item.
  • On average, consumers report keeping promotional calendars for about 12 months - that means a year's worth of branding.
  • Younger consumers are the most likely to own a promotional desk accessory.
  • 42% of U.S. consumers who keep promotional hats do so because they are attractive, second only to outerwear. Hats need to look good!
  • 60% of consumers state they would be more likely to do business with the advertiser who gave them promotional Power Bank
  • In the U.S., 91% keep USB Drives because they are useful, and 7% keep USB Drives because they are attractive.
