According to the suit, the defendants - Zaappaaz,Inc.; Gennex Media,LLC ; Netbrands Media Corp and Custom Wristbands conspired to fix prices on promotional items sold online through text messages, social media and meetings from May 2014 to June 2016. Some of the promotional items included wristbands, lanyards,buttons and temporary tattoos.
The scheme is said to be the brainchild of Netbrands Media Corp's executive Mashnoon Ahmed and Gennex Media,LLC's CEO AK Kuriji. The 4 defendants settled the class action lawsuit for $3.55 million.
Akil Kuriji entered a guilty plea in April 2019 on antitrust violations, this led him to serve 8 months in prison. He is the founder of supplier PMGOA, which he has been focusing on since his release. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he lead the company's selling of masks helping to add 150 jobs in 3 months. He was also recently diagnosed with a brand tumour and is preparing to step down but remains a shareholder in the company.
Ahmed was sentenced to 6 months in prison with a 3 years of supervised release with a $20,000 fine. He was identified as the CEO of Netbrands Media that did business under imprint.com and 24hourwristbands.com.
